Resin buyers could see price relief in June after spring surge

After one of the most volatile stretches in recent memory for resin pricing, processors may finally get some relief in June as polyethylene and polypropylene markets soften following aggressive spring buying.

That’s the outlook from Plastics News senior reporter Frank Esposito, who discussed the latest market developments during the June 16 edition of Polymer Points Live.

PE prices were flat in May after a stunning 30-cent-per-pound increase in April, while PP prices moved in the opposite direction, falling 7 cents in May after rising 16 cents a pound the month before. PVC and PET each gained 2 cents in May, and polystyrene posted its sixth consecutive monthly increase.

Now, however, large inventory buildups and easing concerns over Middle East supply disruptions are changing the market dynamic.

“June things are softening. It’s a softening market, I think, especially for polyethylene,” Esposito said. “People are actually expecting lower prices for polyethylene in June — could be as much as 10 cents a pound.”

The primary driver is inventory. According to Esposito, PE inventories increased by nearly 800 million pounds in May as buyers rushed to secure material ahead of anticipated shortages and additional price hikes.

“A jump of almost 800 million pounds in polyethylene inventory was kind of what spurred this,” he said. “People are still reeling from that 30 cents in April.”
