Associations push Made in Europe preference in Circular Economy Act

European waste and recycling organisations are calling on the European Commission to use the upcoming Circular Economy Act to create stronger demand for recycled materials made and processed in Europe.

In a letter sent on 18 June to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the European Waste Management Association (FEAD), Plastics Recyclers Europe, Recycling Europe and VinylPlus said the Circular Economy Act represents a “key opportunity” to establish a genuine single market for secondary raw materials and address structural barriers facing Europe’s recycling sector.

he groups urged the Commission to place “stronger and more predictable demand for recycled materials” at the centre of the Act through harmonised demand-side measures.

Their intervention comes as European plastics recyclers are seeking a more prominent role in the EU’s competitiveness agenda following the Commission’s Industrial Accelerator Act proposal and amid a wider industry push for “Made in Europe” circular plastics. Late last year, players across the plastics recycling value chain also called on the Commission to impose binding targets for recycled plastics sourced from Europe.
