Resin prices surge as Iran conflict triggers supply shock across plastics
Higher feedstock costs and supply disruptions tied to the war with Iran pushed North American resin prices higher in April, with increases hitting polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, PVC and nylon.
The increases happened alongside a 30-cent hike for polyethylene prices that was previously reported.
Regional prices for polypropylene were up an average of 16 cents per pound.
About 12 cents of that came from higher prices or polymer-grade propylene monomer (PGP), with the rest coming from margin improvement. PP prices had been up 10 cents in March.
Polystyrene prices in the region — including for expanded PS — soared 15 cents per pound on higher prices for benzene feedstock. Benzene was up 96 cents to $4.09 per gallon.
PS makers also were able to gain some margin. PS prices now have increased for five consecutive months, with those increases totaling 26 cents.
Suspension PVC prices were up an average of 4 cents per pound on higher feedstocks and an uptick in construction demand. Prices also have climbed total of 5 cents in February and March.
In engineering resins, nylon 6 prices were up 10 cents in April, with nylon 6/6 up 13 cents on higher feedstock costs.
“Demand in North America is stable to low, with core demand still sluggish, but raw material costs are elevated,” a nylon market source said.
