Weak demand, lower virgin prices drive July’s recycled HDPE retreat

Weak demand and continued declines in virgin resin prices pushed North American recycled high density polyethylene prices lower again in July, extending the market’s summer pullback.

“The gap between virgin and recycled keeps closing. When virgin gets cheap, anybody who isn’t required to use recycled content just goes back to virgin,” said Jorge Alvarez, managing member of plastics recycler and compounder Alandro Plastic Resources LLC in Brownsville, Texas.

As virgin resin becomes less expensive, processors without recycled-content requirements often shift purchases back to virgin material, putting pressure on recycled suppliers to remain price competitive.

Once again, buyers remained cautious and price-sensitive, purchasing only near-term needs.

“Nobody wanted inventory in a month they thought was going down,” he said, adding that buyers placed smaller orders in July and increasingly asked suppliers to hold pricing for 60 to 90 days.

Plastics News is reporting July declines of 2.5 cents per pound for HDPE natural post-consumer pellets, mixed-color post-consumer pellets, and mixed-color post-industrial pellets and flake. Mixed-color post-consumer flake decreased 4.5 cents per pound.
