Polymer prices firming on higher costs and improved demand

In January, European standard thermoplastic price developments were mixed, yet most polymer classes registered small margin gains. In February, prices are on a firmer footing across the board because of higher feedstock costs and a modest improvement in demand.

LDPE prices closed January on a stable to slightly firmer note while LLDPE prices were rolled over from the previous month. HDPE prices fell €15/tonne because of an excess of supply over demand.

PE producers have entered February looking to raise prices following the €15/ton increase in the ethylene contract price. PE producers are calling for increases exceeding the monomer settlement, citing ongoing margin recovery efforts, and tightening availability for certain grades.

In January, PP prices declined by €15/tonne, which was less than the €30/tonne drop in the propylene contract. PP markets have entered February with a modest upward adjustment, supported by a firmer propylene contract settlement.

Polystyrene prices increased €20/tonne in January, which virtually matched the rise in the styrene monomer reference price. PS markets entered February with producers asking for significant price increases following a rise of €120/tonne in the cost of styrene monomer.

Base PVC prices were mostly unchanged in January, despite a proportionate €12.5/tonne cost reduction because of the lower ethylene contract. PVC markets entered February with tentative signs of a small price upturn, supported by a firmer ethylene settlement and renewed margin recovery efforts from producers.

In January, PET price developments were mixed; some contracts were rolled over from the previous month while others saw gains of €10-40/tonne. This month, PET prices are rising because of supply concerns and an increase in feedstock costs.
